Course Syllabus
Our Business English course is intended to give students a solid foundation and a working knowledge of professional and business English. The class is taught at an intermediate level and students should have a minimum level of pre-intermediate English language proficiency and writing experience. Class activities include role plays, simulations, email writing, CV writing, and presentations, which are all designed to develop fluency, listening, reading, and writing skills. Various aspects of business English will be covered, including, but not limited to social language, participation in meetings, and presentations.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Fill out application forms
Describe work duties and job positions
Handle formal and informal introductions
Speak appropriately on the phone, take messages, and use general telephone language
Set up and participate in meetings
Demonstrate appropriate correspondence skills- managing complaints, meeting minutes, and e-mails
Take part in negotiations with business partners
COURSE OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will have finished:
A professional Resume/CV
A polished cover letter that is adaptable for use throughout the student’s career
A foundational portfolio, complete with cover letter, resume, references, and related certifications/ material to build upon throughout the student’s lifetime
A persuasive letter packet for use in future rhetorical scenarios
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
This course will be conducted via lecture, demonstration, media, in-class activities, student presentations, and homework assignments
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Upon completion of this course, a certificate will be awarded to qualifying students. An overall course average of 70% must be attained to achieve a certificate.
Attendance: 50% (Attendance for each class comprises 2.5% of overall grade)
Presentation: 20% (Refer to Presentation Evaluation Form)
CV/Resume: 15% (Final draft of CV completed as per course guidelines)
Cover Letter: 5% (Final draft of Cover Letter completed as per course guidelines)
Letter Pack: 5% (Written letter assignments completed)
LinkedIn: 5% (LinkedIn Checklist completed as per course guidelines)
