
Professional English Writing
Course Syllabus
Our English Writing Course is intended to give students a solid foundation and a working knowledge of the fundamentals of English writing for professional purposes. The class is taught at an upper intermediate level and students should have a minimum level of intermediate English language proficiency and writing experience. This course aims to improve your professional English writing skills by developing your use of vocabulary, grammar, understanding of different business and content writing genres, and your ability to write professional business documents. Students need not bring any materials to class, as all will be provided by the teacher.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Self-correct improper and boring writing styles
Demonstrate appropriate correspondence skills: e-mails, business letters, personal letters
Identify the purpose of punctuation and use it properly and expressively
Write business proposals, plans, and reports
Take minutes in a meeting
Compose the basics of a company webpage
Avoid plagiarism while properly quoting and integrating sources in an article
Write interesting content for the purpose of social media exposure
COURSE OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will have finished:
A personal journal (also extra credit)
A packet of sample business documents/letters for future reference
An article (listicle) to be published on social media (LinkedIn)
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
This course will be conducted via lecture, demonstration, limited media, in-class writing activities, and homework assignments.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
Upon completion of this course, a certificate will be awarded to qualifying students. An overall course average of 70% must be attained to achieve a certificate.
Attendance: 50% (Attendance for each class comprises 2.5% of overall grade)
Assignments: 50%
Extra Credit: 100-in15 Exercises (0.5 points each)
